Dear Members of WHU and friends,
Thank you for your support over the last several months. With your help, we have been able to accomplish much in a short time. We've supported the EAB suspension, Youth Mentored Hunting and several other important bills to not only protect our traditions but to make our sport less regulated. After what seems two very poor deer hunting season, we realize issues will not be corrected overnight.
What we have realized is issues that need to be accomplished can no longer be done at a grassroots level. Without being listed as a formal nonprofit organization, we will not be formally recognized by the State, be invited to serve on stakeholder committees or work with legislators. With this in mind, we have united with a few other groups (NE WI Concerned Hunters and HARC) under Deer Hunters United of WI.
"Uniting deer hunters to insure sound management, maximum hunting opportunity and preserving Wisconsin's hunting traditions"
Our immediate concerns are with current season structure, individual deer unit goals and deer range. Proper herd estimation and influence of predation on our herd is among out top priority.
While we work to achieve our goals, we must take responsibility. We must work together, educate each other and manage our lands accordingly. The WI deer hunter has become an educated hunter. No longer can we place blame on others for the tags we fill. We ultimately have the final say when we pull that trigger, sometimes we must use discretion.
Our priorities will always lie with deer hunting first, yet we intend to work with WI sportsmen groups to insure all of our hunting traditions are protected. The bear hunter, turkey hunter and bow hunters have their voices being heard. Isn't it time for the 650,000 deer hunters of WI to have theirs heard?
I understand it is difficult for some to believe a difference can be made. For some, hunting issues divide us and other want fringe benefits of gifts and magazines from an organization. For me, the difficulty lies from moving on from the grassroots. But what I've learned in the past year, this must be done in order for our voices to be heard.
We can make change; we can influence deer management to insure our traditions remain alive for generations to come. We cannot divide ourselves and we will not stray into those issues (baiting, crossbow, etc) that have divided us in the past.
If you or your group would like to unite with us, please contact us.
The time is here and now, it's time to put the deer hunter’s voice back into deer management.
Sincerely,
Jeff Geitner
